Hand-Painted Enamel Earrings

These earrings start with a simple piece of copper. Using enamel powder, the piece is heated to about 1500 degrees (I prefer to use a hand-held torch rather than a kiln) and the powder fuses to the copper and forming a smooth layer of glass - it's quite magical! This process is repeated several times on both the front and the back, to build up color and to stabilize the metal. The design on the front comes from a black and white decal that I make myself and then fire into the glass. Finally, using a combination of several types of enamel paint and a tiny, tiny paintbrush, I colorize the decals and fire them one last time. That simple piece of copper will have been torched up to ten times before this process is complete. I enjoy this work immensely and delight in seeing the pieces blossom before my eyes.
